The Clavichord

An intimate, stylish bar with bags of potential, but not enough live music

Time Out Says

If you make your way through Barsha Heights, you’ll come across the uber-trendy SOMEWHERE Hotel, which stands out like some Facebookish blue thumb, glowing loudly and proudly in the night sky. It’s here that you’ll find live music venue and sophisticated bar, The Clavichord.

Now, the name may give it away (a clavichord is a 14th Century stringed keyboard), but the bar recently announced a brand-new series of live and themed music nights running almost every day of the week. Sadly, there isn’t any during our visit, and it’s almost eerily quiet.

We head over on a night of the week where many of the city’s nightspots are almost bursting at the seams. Upon our arrival, we’re struck by how small this bar actually is, which isn’t always a disadvantage. If it’s small but filled with live music emanating from the corner stage, then this place could be one of the swankiest music clubs in town, reminiscent of old jazz bars from the 1930s. But, on the other side of that double-edged sword, on a quiet night it loses almost all of the charm we could so easily imagine this place having.

It’s full of vintage décor and huge, comfortable high-backed red leather chairs. which are great for spending a couple of hours having a quiet catch up with an old friend. Yet this place is almost entirely dependent on live music, and we keep finding ourselves thinking “where’s the jazz?”. It’s frustrating, because we can envisage a swinging club packed to the rafters, but only if this place picks up on the busier nights, which we are told do exist.

So make sure you call ahead to find out who is due on stage, because this bar doesn’t carry enough charm on its own.

The bottom line

A bar that falls way short of its potential.
