The Flag & Whistle Sports Bar

Hardly Premier League, but it won’t cause an upset

Time Out Says

Dubai is a sports-mad city – as reflected in the number of Messi and Ronaldo shirts you’ll see when wandering around town. Another clue as to Dubaians’ fixation with sport is the array of themed bars dedicated to it.

Even in Al Jaddaf you’ll find one – The Flag & Whistle. Whether it’s named after football officials is up for debate, but what isn’t is the fact that this bar is very much in the lower leagues.

In a strange way that seems to be part of the charm, however. You could have easily walked into a London working men’s club, although you’ll get a warmer welcome here. The staff are certainly keen to greet any new faces and despite there only being one pump of draught hops working on our visit, the warmth extended
to us still makes it a very pleasant experience.

The Flag & Whistle offers a pub grub menu containing the usual suspects along with some curries and other more “exotic” dishes and if you’re a fan of the arrows, it has an oche around the corner from the bar. The dedicated pool room is a nice touch, too. Several weekly deals are on offer and despite the demise of the popular Northern Soul night, we’re assured it gets quite lively at weekends.

The bottom line
Worth a try – but only if you’re in the area.
