Visiting The Playhouse in Al Jaddaf is a bit of a strange experience, but it could just be the authentically quirky night out we’ve been longing for.
The lounge bar is tucked at the back of the relatively unknown GoldState Hotel, which is itself hidden behind a huge billboard at the side of Al Khail Road.
The Playhouse is completely deserted when we walk in, and we fear it could spell the end of our night out. But in a shocking twist of events, the drinks are cheap (Dhs35 for a bottle of hops), the pumping music is great and the bar staff are enthusiastic.
The décor here is eclectic, although it seems to be generally held together by music memorabilla – with the centrepiece being a mural featuring a motley crew of famous faces (think David Bowie and rapper The Notorious B.I.G.). The cavernous space is lit in deep reds and purples, with a lack of windows only adding to the surreal student union speakeasy vibes.
We’d recommend waiting until one of the bar’s DJ nights to visit, but if you’re looking for somewhere offbeat that’s yet to hit mainstream, this might just be your new favourite venue.
The bottom line
Quirky bar that needs to find a crowd.
