The Pool Bar

Hotel bar with great views of Sheikh Zayed Road

Time Out Says

For a hotel opening, there’s been surprisingly little fanfare surrounding the launch of the JAL Hotel on Sheikh Zayed Road, which started quietly welcoming guests a few weeks ago. As you navigate your way to the hotel’s pool bar on the seventh floor (not quite the top of the hotel, as the website would have you believe), there are a couple of other things that may catch your attention, notably the lack of sparkly or gold embellishments in the finishings. Instead, the design mirrors the kind of sleek, simplistic design you might expect to find in a Japanese-owned hotel. Rather more unexpected, however, is the pleasant, sweet aroma throughout the hotel corridors and, stranger still, the peculiar square-shaped toilet seats.

The bar itself, little more than a serving hatch with a hop tap next to it, is geared more towards sunbathers at the (incredibly inviting) pool than non-hotel guests. There isn’t even a bar menu, so if you’re not sure what you fancy, you’ll have to take a look at excerpts from the room service book. And it’s a real shame, because while it’s certainly no 360°, the setting is well suited to a few low-key sundowners overlooking the coast.
