The Red Lion

Almost a year on, the relaunched pub appears to have found its feet

Time Out Says

A cavernous British pub just off Sheikh Zayed Road, The Red Lion, as it currently stands, is the reincarnation of one of Dubai’s oldest pubs. The original opened in 1979, and was later demolished in 2012, along with the rest of the Metropolitan Hotel.

Initially, we weren’t enamoured with what felt like a not-particularly-sympathetic recreation. But as the new Red Lion approaches the end of its first year in business, we find ourselves finally ready to embrace it.

Cosy booths and low, faux beam-lined ceilings lend the room a snug, homely feel that even the swathes of unused space around the room can’t undermine, while the sheer volume of TV screens lining the walls means you’ll never have to crane your neck to catch the day’s match action.

There are good deals, too. From noon to 2am any day of the week, get a bucket of hops with a bucket of wings for Dhs139, or head down for the daily happy hour running from 4pm to 8pm. The Sunday roast is great value at Dhs79, while the Saturday brunch, priced from Dhs159, might be one of our favourite discoveries of the past few months (more on that in next week’s issue).

Expect to see us regularly propping up the (original 1979) wooden bar.

The bottom line
A perfect Saturday afternoon pub.
