Time Out Says
Despite being new, The Stag has a cosy homely vibe with brick-effect walks, leather booths, chalkboards with “funny” quotes (I Have Mixed Drinks About Feelings et al), and games like chess and Jenga.
Brits may be reminded of generic locals back home, but in the best possible way.
The “Guzzlers” menu features a vast choice of beverages including craft hops (with seasonal options, too) and prices are keen with a glass of house grape at Dhs45, pints ranging between Dhs46 and Dhs49 and a daily happy hour from noon until 8pm with select drinks coming in at Dhs28.
We can’t resist the grub, so after scouring the “Belly Fillers” menu that’s packed full of British classics ranging from Dhs55 to Dhs99 (think chicken Kiev, bangers and mash, scotch eggs and more) we opt for the steak pie and the fish ’n’ chips.
The belt-looseningly large pie is packed full of big chunks of meat in a dark Irish hops-based gravy, topped with a flaky pastry and served alongside steamed veggies and mash. For Dhs55 you can’t complain.
On to a much-loved British staple, fish and chips. Served with good, old-fashioned mushy peas and tartar sauce, the fish is meaty but the batter could be a little crispier. However, the highlight of the meal is the chips. Proper chips. Chips worthy of dipping in the steak pie gravy.
The staff are friendly and come over eagerly waiting for positive feedback – it’s clear to see this new pub wants to please.
If you’re looking to enjoy a decently priced drink in a smoke-free atmosphere along with pocket-friendly pub grub it’s worth checking this new gastropub out.
It’s relatively quiet on our visit but once it draws in the crowd The Stag has the potential of being a great little watering hole for the area.
