Trophy Room

For a casual night with some sports

Time Out Says

Things are moving and shaking over at Fairmont Dubai these days. With the ever-hot-right-now The House Party Bar, the everpopular
Bistrot Bagatelle and the ever-opulent Cavalli Club, there’s never been more reason to visit.

Now, there’s Trophy Room. But, does it reach the same high standards at the hotel’s current game-changing line-up? Almost.

As sports bars go, the goldtrimmed space is up there with the better half of Dubai’s. The space is inviting, with plenty of screens beaming out plenty of (varied) sports. We divide our attention between handball, football, basketball and Snakes and Ladders on our visit.

The last one’s as a result of the well-stocked board games corner that we help ourselves to. It’s perfect for those who prefer to live the action, rather than just watch it. Other choices include Uno, chess, draughts (checkers), cards or Monopoly – if you’re planning to bed in for the day.

The décor is little underwhelming, sort of a mix between an airport lounge and school sports hall – largely due to the huge trophy cabinet filled
with, well, trophies. There is also the usual array of sports memorabilia dotted around plus cosy booths, bar stools and everything in between.

We’re pleased to see a large number of fellow drinkers and diners when we arrive on a weeknight. The clientele is a mix of hotel guests and small groups of post-work blokes watching the match. There’s also a happy hour from 5pm until 8pm every day, with selected beverages starting
from just Dhs32 – perfect for that mammoth Monopoly session.

The drinks menu is solid, with a good variety of the usual hops, wines and shorts.

Probably the main attraction at Trophy Room, however, is the social media-friendly, gold-dusted chicken nuggets and fries. That’s real 24kt gold by the way, a gimmick that we were desperate to try. Alas, as it turned out, chefs don’t often stock the elusive dish – leaving us disappointed. Perhaps kicking it over to the specials menu would make more sense than having it on the permanent menu.

That being said, there’s nothing that the tender butter chicken curry and a cold one can’t fix. Plus back-to-back wins on Snakes and Ladders.

For a casual night with some sports, it’s a solid choice, but the appareance of those nuggets would put it up there with the Fairmont’s other shining stars.
