An Art Deco lounge bar with cracking views

Time Out Says

Which side will you choose? This sky-high bar at the new Grand Plaza Mövenpick in Media City has incredible views looking towards the Arabian Gulf and, on the other side, inland towards the desert. So what’s it to be? The shimmering waters around Palm Jumeirah, or Barsha Heights?

Actually, now it’s summer you needn’t worry about it at all as, inexplicably, the curtains are drawn inside the venue meaning you can’t see a thing from the 23rd floor venue.

When it is cool enough, however, this rather splendidly decked out Art Deco bar has two fantastic terraces running along both sides of the long lounge, each with their own bar and plenty of sofas to lounge upon.

Inside, the décor is all golds, reds and marble and the soundtrack of cool, chilled electro tunes mean it’s not all bad, despite the lack of view outside.

As we approach we notice it’s a smoking bar, and with a cabinet full of expensive-looking Cuban rolls taking pride of place inside, that’s unlikely to change any time soon. With the al fresco area out of bounds due to the heat, there’s nowhere for the non-smokers in our group to escape to.

That doesn’t detract from a super experience otherwise, thankfully. From the staff to the drinks options and down to the bar snacks, this place ticks lots of boxes. Visit during happy hour, from opening until 7.23pm every day, and you’ll get drinks for Dhs23 (the 23 theme is strong with this one).

The bar prides itself on its mixed drinks, and the menu certainly sounds impressive. They look good when they’re heading to the tables around us, too, but we’re sticking with a happy hour bottle of hops.

The drinks are brought out with a couple of bowls of cheesy nuts and smoked pretzels, which  make a mockery of the free snacks offered up in other nearby spots, and are gladly refilled by the truly excellent staff.

Thursday evenings post-work seem to be popular, and the new Tuesday ladies’night (three drinks tokens and you can give one to a man if you’re feeling generous) should be good, too. Weekends seem less busy, which is probably to be expected in an area like Dubai Media City.

When the terraces are open again, there’ll be few better places for sundowners in the locale, but we can’t help thinking it needs something else to draw people in later and at weekends. We’ll be watching closely.
