1 Best for the bathroom
Housekeeper Candle by Price’s: This candle contains ‘Odourfoyl’, a technology that apparently took 10 years to develop and is said to banish bad smells. On a less high-tech note, the candle also contains the scent of beeswax to relax, lemon to uplift, and mandarin, which is believed to work as an anti-depressant.

2 Best for the bedroom
Baies candle by Diptyque: A high-end choice (with prices to match), French company Diptyque uses all-natural scents, and its elegantly packaged candles have a cult following. Our favourite is Baies, which contains Bulgarian rose to uplift and blackberries to cleanse: the combination is sweet and divine.

3 Best for the kitchen
Large vanilla candle by Ikea: This affordable candle’s scent fills a room with the smell of baking: the aroma of vanilla is said to both calm and console.
Dubai Festival City (800 4532), Dhs18.
4 Best for the front room
Quercus by Penhaligon’s: Smelling like fresh cologne, this candle has head notes of bergamot, which deodorises and calms anxiety; lemon and lime, which refresh; and mandarin, which is known as the ‘happy’ aromatherapy oil.
The Dubai Mall (04 434 3122), Dhs165.
5 Best for the dining room
Thé et Pain d’Epices by L’Artisan Parfumeur: The scent from this candle continues to grow on us: it smells like crystallised oranges and smoked lapsang souchong tea, as well as ginger to stimulate and cinnamon to soothe and help beat nausea.
The Dubai Mall (04 330 8261), Dhs220.
6 Best for occasions
Fleurs de Fête by Voluspa: This candle scents a room even when it’s not burning. Inspired by weddings, the note of crème rose adds romance and comfort, lily soothes, narcissus adds harmony and the butter crème cake element just smells yum!
Harvey Nichols, Mall of the Emirates (04 409 8888), Dhs80.

Try spritzing Le Labo’s home scents across a room. We love Calone 17’s geranium aroma and Santal 26’s hints of sandalwood. Each scent takes up to 18 months to create and is mixed upon purchase, ensuring freshness. Just don’t let the simple packaging fool you: these are pricey.
