After an incredibly stressful taxi journey to find the new Heavenly Beauty Salon on Al Safa Road (even when handed a map, the driver still struggles), I’m ready for some R&R – and that’s what I get. Upon entering the cool, calm interior of the salon, I’m welcomed by the friendly staff and offered a drink.
After filling out the obligatory forms, I’m taken to the newly built ‘spa’ section – although it’s just an add-on to the hair and beauty area, it has clearly been designed to a high standard. The curved walls and mood lighting lead round to the changing rooms, where I’m handed a robe and told to get changed – fortunately there are no paper knickers in sight.
The treatment begins with a foot cleanse and massage while my therapist, Smile, tells me a little about the lymphatic detox massage I’m about to receive. She explains that the treatment will improve my metabolism, help to eliminate waste and toxins and boost my immune system, all while facilitating feelings of health and vitality. I’m always a little sceptical about spas’ supposed magical healing powers, but I’m perfectly happy to test the theory.
Using scented essential oils, Smile applies light pressure and soft kneading movements over my lymph nodes – these small organs, distributed throughout the body, are part of the immune system and help to filter out any bad guys. Within half an hour I’m ‘in the zone’ and genuinely forget where I am (I’m only once disturbed by a loud voice outside).
I’m roused from my relaxed state by a bell ringing above my stomach to signify the end of the massage. I’m led to the relaxation zone for a cup of green tea: the area isn’t particularly private and could do with being a little more secluded, but it’s still a nice touch and a fitting way to end one of the most interesting massages I’ve ever experienced.
The Lymphatic Detox is at Heavenly Beauty Salon and Spa, Al Safa Road, Jumeirah (04 344 4456). Dhs450 for 90 minutes.
