Man/Age body scrub

Adam Wilson gets buffed up as he road tests a male spa package

The spa

This is a surprisingly modern, stylish outlet, tucked away in Dubai Media City’s Arjaan Rotana Hotel. Given all the busy, stressed media-types in close proximity, it’s a great location for a spa.

The treatment

The works: a salt body scrub and a sports massage, followed by an exfoliating skin fitness facial.

The promise

The body scrub promises to rid you of dead skin cells, which would otherwise sit around on your body collecting dirt, while the massage claims to awaken your muscles and sooth your joints. After this, the facial will unblock your pores and tone your skin.

Step by step

It’s only once I’ve sat down in Man/Age’s stylish waiting room that I realise I’ve signed up to be rubbed down from head to toe by three different men, all in the name of health. But any reservations I might have had are swept away after a few minutes with the professional team at the spa. I’m soon led into the massage room for my first treatment of the evening: a body scrub. ‘It’s not a relaxing treatment’ my therapist states, and he’s right. That said, the invigorating feeling of having my dead skin rubbed away made up for it, and despite my initial concerns it might be slightly painful, the pressure was perfectly bearable. Jumping in the shower afterwards, a quick rinse left me feeling as smooth as a James Bond chat up line and ready for my massage, where a therapist went to work on my tired, taut muscles, working out several knots while keeping the pressure gentle enough to ensure the experience was still a relaxing one. One more shower later, I made my way over to the facial treatment across the hall, where one of the spa’s skin experts pointed out blackheads on my face, politely yet firmly explaining I should ‘moisturise around them’. Finally, after numerous cleansing, exfoliating and moisturising layers applied directly to my face, followed by a brief head massage, I departed the spa, feeling relaxed, revitalised and smoother than ever.

Results

A clear complexion and baby soft skin. Unfortunately this only lasts a few days, but the rest of my skin feels smooth long after the treatment, and my muscles are definitely more relaxed. I’m ready to head back to work.

Pros

• My muscles felt soothed, while the skin on my body felt soft and my face felt smooth and clean.
• I learnt more about my skin and how to look after it.
• The process mimics a natural process (breaking down fat).
• Everyone I encountered was welcoming and knowledgeable, while the spa itself was modern, stylish and clean.

Cons

• Overall, the treatment takes a quite a while (roughly two and a half hours) so make sure the rest of your plans are pretty flexible.
