Summer Express spa treatment

Time Out tries the Ritz-Carlton DIFC's sleek new spa

The spa

The new Ritz-Carlton spa at DIFC is summery, with warm hues and crisp white linen, and thankfully it isn’t bustling with guests, which ups the serene factor by 10. It can be a bit of a maze to navigate, but there are always helpful staff on hand should you take a wrong turn. Spa guests can make use of the sauna and steam room, so make sure you come early.

The promise

The July Summer Express promotion offers a hat-trick of treatments: a scrub, back massage and facial, each lasting 30 minutes. It’s designed to both relax and invigorate.

Step by step

My therapist, Nancy, welcomes me with a smile and chatty conversation about, yes, the summer heat, before explaining the treatment in detail as we walk to a fairly spacious room. While my chosen treatment includes three set 30-minute segments, the spa is willing to accommodate a personal request – my feet are sore from the hours of walking I did the night before, and Nancy says she’ll spend 10 minutes giving them some love too. Perfect.

I lie face down and get ready for the first treatment, the body scrub. The spa uses quality face and body products, including those from Natura Bissé and Ila, so I have high expectations – and I’m not disappointed. The scrub has a distinctive scent that reminds me of medicated herbs, but it’s very, very relaxing, with just the right amount of pressure.

A quick shower later and it’s time for the back massage: a smooth combination massage using long, languid strokes. It almost makes me drift off to sleep. About 20 minutes later, Nancy moves on to my legs and feet.

The facial is the last treatment and, instead of pasting a mask on and calling it a day, Nancy first analyses my skin; then, with a mix of prescribed lotions and potions, my face and neck are cleansed, scrubbed, soothed and rubbed. Before I even start to get restless, it’s all over.

Results

The treatment leaves me thoroughly de-stressed from the scrub and massage, but, more importantly, rather invigorated. The relaxing scent of the products lingers for hours, and my face reflects how I’m feeling – refreshed.

Pros

• The three-in-one combo offers great value for money.
• The massage is one of the best I’ve had in a while.
• Products used here actually feel like they are doing the trick
• Therapists go that extra mile. Just as I’m about to leave, Nancy asks if I’m heading outdoors straight after the treatment. When I say yes, she applies a light sunscreen. It’s the little things…

Cons

• If you aren’t familiar with DIFC, it can be difficult to find the hotel.
• Being right in the heart of the city, treatment rooms don’t have much of a view.
