Body Balance, Fitness First

Time Out tests its 'down dog' at this popular yoga class

Part yoga, part Tai Chi and part pilates, Body Balance combines elements of ancient teachings with modern medical research in a manner that a beginner can easily get spiritual to. Some light Tai Chi stretching is followed by squatting in a way that feels like fire is passing over your thighs. Even the instructor confessed to feeling the burn. Then, as the background music increases in tempo, it is down to the mat for some pilates. Exercises requiring you to support your body just inches off the floor test the toughest stomach muscles before the hamstrings and leg muscles are stretched to the max. ‘The hard part is done now ...’ promised the instructor. We’ve heard that before but as the lights are dimmed, the music mellows and you are told to lie back, relax and let everything go. Classes at Fitness First are free for members or guests. A guest day pass costs Dhs100. Mon 8pm, Tue 9.30am, Thu 10.30am, Fri 11.30am Sat 11.30am. Dubai Media City. (800 3486377).
