Ashtanga Yoga, Core Direction

Time Out tests its 'down dog' at this popular yoga class

Core Direction in Dubai Marina and The Greens offers this form of Ashtanga Yoga which flows through various different warrior poses out of a series of sun salutations after starting off with some centering exercises. Joumana, the teacher, explains the different poses clearly and moves around helping absolute beginners get the right pose. It sits somewhere between a gentle stretch and a decent work out with some sections breaking a sweat and others letting you relax. The class follows a similar routine every time, so regular attendees can concentrate on their breathing rather than on learning new moves. Options are given for those that want to stretch themselves a little further – including, towards the end, shoulder and head stands. Although it’s quite a friendly class, thanks to the small gym studio, the sessions can be fairly packed out and personal space tends to be at a minimum. As long as you don’t mind bending, flexing and stretching within inches of someone else’s foot you’ll be ok. Dhs50 per class.
Booking the day before is essential. Tues 8.30pm, Sat 11am. Damac Waves Tower, Dubai Marina. (055 693 0668).
