Budget spa treatments

Where to chill out for just two hundred dirhams in Dubai

With flights and holidays to pay for, summer can be almost as expensive as Christmas for a lot of people. And if you’re exchanging gifts or going away this Eid weekend, you’ll most likely be looking for ways to save a few fils without sacrificing your beauty routine. Fear not: this week we bring you three super-indulgent 90-minute treatments for just Dhs200, including one that’s exclusive to Time Out readers.

Limpopo detoxifying body treatment (Women only)
Yes, it’s a strange name, but you won’t be laughing once you’ve tried it. This full, detoxifying body treatment is designed to improve blood circulation and lymphatic flow, aiding the removal of waste products, toxins and excess fluid. Feeling bloated? This should help. Beginning with a vacuum suction massage combined with aromatherapy oils, the treatment then progresses to a body scrub, which uses barley and coffee extracts. At first it seems an unusual combination, but barley is apparently rich in essential nutrients and antioxidants, and works as a natural skin purifier. Meanwhile, it’s claimed that the coffee extract helps to clear the skin (minus the powerful caffeine buzz from your morning Americano), improving the flow of micronutrients in the skin and promoting the break-up of fatty deposits (these can look like whiteheads on the face, but shouldn’t be squeezed in the same way as spots). Finally, you’ll be wrapped in a vitamin-rich hydrating cream masque, mixed with fresh yoghurt to further aid the detoxification process, before rounding off the entire treatment with a super-relaxing Indian head massage, courtesy of the spa’s well-practised hands.
Dhs199 for Time Out readers (normal price Dhs400) until September 30. Take a copy of this issue along to your appointment to receive your exclusive discount. The Cure, Dubai Media City (04 391 6485).

Gents’ grooming with lime scalp treatment (Men only)
Never one to take male grooming lightly, Royal Cut is offering the perfect all-in-one package for men on the go. And considering the whole shebang only takes 90 minutes, even the most ‘type A’ personalities
should be able to see the treatment through, which means there are no excuses for an unkempt man. Pruning the facial hair is first on the agenda, with a traditional shave that will turn any beast into a (macho) beauty. Lashings of shaving foam are administered for the traditional shave, making sure the face stays hydrated rather than drying out and leaving skin cracked. To avoid a possible Sweeney Todd outcome (not that we want to scare you), a word to the wise: stay as still as possible. And unless you want to scream, horror movie-style, avoid aftershave for a little while after. Luxurious lime oil is used for a scalp treatment, removing impurities from the hair while the strong smell of lime leaves you feeling refreshed and energised. A relaxing massage ensures the oil soaks into you scalp while stimulating and strengthening your hair follicles. You never know, you may just end up with lavish locks to rival those of Roger Federer… well, maybe. To finish off your session, there’s a traditional hair cut to be sure you leave the salon looking dapper.
Dhs200 until September 30. Royal Cut Salon, Le Royal Méridien Beach Resort and Spa, Dubai Marina (04 399 5555).

Shiatsu massage (women only)

Using ancient Japanese acupressure techniques, this traditional, oil-free massage works along the 12 meridians of the body to improve energy flow (referred to in this instance as chi) – it’s a method not altogether dissimilar from acupuncture, just minus the needles. Unlike a typical Swedish massage, the focus here is not on soothing strokes, but on encouraging energy flow, reducing stress, fatigue and muscle stiffness, while improving vitality. In other words, instead of feeling groggy and sleepy when you slide off the therapist’s table, you should feel harmonised, energised and ready to go. The therapist’s thumbs, elbows and palms are used to unblock energy centres and areas that are obstructed, to encourage the free flow of your own life-force energy.
Dhs200 (normally Dhs400) until September 30. La Contour Spa, Tiffany Tower, Jumeirah Lakes Towers (04 447 3626).
