We sample a party make-up session at new studio

Tried & tested

The promise
In preparation for party season, I arrive at Makeup Forever keen to be given a glamorous, sophisticated look for a big evening event. I’m thinking Audrey Hepburn: subtle and chic, but striking.

Step by step
As I settle into a chair in the small, brightly lit studio, Sam, my expert make-up artist for the evening, talks me through the steps as he begins by cleaning and then preparing my skin. Apparently the staff place as much emphasis on educating clients as they do enhancing their appearance. Using different brushes and sponges, he slowly transforms my face using Makeup Forever’s HD range (he tells me the light-reflecting pigments in the products have the power to make you look airbrushed in photographs).

The results
The final look is very Middle Eastern – my eyes have been heavily lined with black liner, blending into smoky green lids. Compared to how I would normally apply make-up for a night out, it’s incredibly heavy, and though it’s been good fun to try something different, it’s far too stagey for me, and draws some big laughs from friends and family.

Pros
• The artists really know their stuff, and offer great advice on how to clean and prepare your skin, as well as suggesting colours to suit your eye colour and skin tone.
• Face make-up (foundation, powders and the like) are applied sparingly, which is great for even coverage without a cake-face look.

Cons
• The waterproof range, though commendably long-lasting for those who plan to party all night, takes a long time and a lot of cotton pads and make-up wipes to remove. Makeup Forever recommends you use its own make-up remover to clean away these products.
