Calm Spa and Salon tried & tested

We try an exotic coconut rub and milk ritual wrap

Tried & tested

The promise
Described as a traditional Balinese ceremony, the exotic coconut rub and milk ritual wrap claims to be excellent for skin smoothing and softening – perfect for my weather-worn exterior. The spa itself certainly seems to live up to the hotel’s name, with deep blue themes throughout.

Step by step
Once I’m escorted to my strikingly blue-lit treatment room, I take my position on the treatment bed as my therapist sets to work. The coconut rub is best described as a coarse paste, which she applies, not too roughly, to each of my limbs, using strong, circular motions. Once I’m covered front and back, she wraps me up in the mixture to marinate, and begins a relaxing pressure-point massage on my face and scalp. Ten minutes later, I’m ushered into the shower to rinse off.

The results
The next morning, my skin is noticeably smoother and free from dry patches, particularly on my legs.

• The treatment is only 60 minutes long, so it’s a good fuss-free option if you want a quick body polish.
• All the spa employees are relaxed, chatty and helpful, and the modern interiors give it a funky, express feel.

• The treatment itself avoided the front part of my body entirely – my tummy could have done with a good scrub.
