Atmosphere: Right in the middle of the maze-like Deira one-way system, the Al Ghurair Rayhaan Rotana is not the easiest hotel to reach, so plug in your sat-nav! Once there, however, the valet parking is straightforward and, from the moment you enter the spa, through two walls of water cascading from the ceiling, the deceptively spacious Zen the Spa transports you far away from the manically busy streets outside. Simple and neutral, the interior is a welcoming world of soothing sights, sounds and smells.
Experience: On our visit, we tried the aromatherapy massage. Our therapist asked us some follow-up questions and encouraged us to allow him to deviate a little from the typical aromatherapy setup in order to focus on our individual needs. We were glad we agreed to this as, after plenty of massaging, stroking and kneading, we emerged from the treatment room with our stiff neck feeling loose and pain-free.
Treatments: The aromatherapy massage is the signature treatment, but there’s a good selection of other massages, body treatments, facials and hand or foot treatments on offer. It’s also a great place to stop if you’re pushed for time and in need of some pampering with the reflexology, back and neck stress reliever or mini-facial all being carried out in just half an hour.
Service: We suspect Cipriano, our therapist, may have needed to follow our treatment with a facial massage of his own; such was the extent of his smiling. Pleasant throughout, he listened intently as we described what we were hoping for from the treatment before delivering the lot.
Any extras: The treatment finished with a bit of a product display, and while our therapist didn’t try to hard-sell anything, it was a less-than-relaxing end to our time in the treatment room. Luckily, it wasn’t our final experience of the day as we then got to unwind with some ginger tea and fresh fruit.
