Tom Gerhart heads to new barber shop (and hairdresser to Will Smith) Beats and Cuts for a cut and beard trim.
A haircut in a, ‘cool and artistic environment where you can check in on the latest in art, music and fashion’.
Step by step
The salon is quiet on the weekday afternoon, but the music and quirky decor adorning the walls give the place a bit of a buzz nonetheless. It’s very lively on a weekend, I am told, when the music theme comes into its own. I ask my barber for a haircut and beard trim, before he leads me to the sink to wash my hair. I ask him to cut it short, but with scissors rather than an electric clipper, and he suggest a length and style that will suit my face. It’s quick and the results are neat. My stylist then moves onto my bushy beard, taming it again with scissors only (which I like), before shaping it around my neck. He then shaves my beard expertly with a straight razor.
My haircut is neat and tidy, as is my beard. The only drawback to my new look is the space above my chin, which is a little too shaped for my liking – I look like a model on the box of a Braun beard trimmer for a few days.
• The arty environment makes it worth a visit – just be careful not to bob your head to the beats while the barber is doing his thing.
• Expect to pay a little more cash for your cut than at some barber shops.
