Unconventional cures for depression

We explore alternative forms of emotional therapy promising inner peace

Jenny Hewett takes a trip round some of the more unconventional therapies that are available to try right here on your doorstep.

Last year, the UAE was named the 14th happiest country in the world, according to a UN report that took into account factors such as lifestyle, wealth and crime. But while the façade might paint a glossy picture, the truth is that many Dubaians, and in particular women (who are three times more likely to suffer depression and anxiety in the UAE than men according to the American Centre for Psychiatry and Neurology) struggle with emotional issues. Often social stigma stops them from seeking help. While those suffering from depression should always consult their doctor first, here are some alternative forms of emotional healing, which along with counselling and psychotherapy can set positive gears in motion and aid your journey to inner peace.

Hypnotherapy

What is it?
Best used in conjunction with counselling or therapy, hypnotherapy allows a person to access and explore more painful thoughts, feelings and buried memories while in a hypnotic state. The idea is that it enables you to perceive issues differently.

How it heals
It’s often seen as a solution for promoting a healthy mindset and not just solving particular issues. Mona Mirza, founder of Biolite Aesthetic Clinic refers to it as a ‘mind spa’ where you can totally switch off.

What results can you expect?
When under hypnosis, you will likely be more open to suggestion and this can improve how you look at and feel about phobias, depression, stress, grief and loss, low self-esteem, weight loss and even addictions. Hypnotherapy works by giving suggestions directly to someone’s subconscious mind after putting them in the state of hypnosis, this can change or modify habits whether they are habits of behaviour, such as increasing focus or getting rid of panic attacks, or habits of feeling, such as anxiety or even physical pain.

Who is it best for?
Those suffering from issues including nerves involving public speaking to depression, stress, fertility issues and quitting smoking.
Dhs750 per session. Biolite Aesthetic Clinic, Villa 57, Al Thanya Road, Umm Suqeim 2 (04 375 2122).

Nayera Dance

What is it?
A weekly two-hour class incorporating moving meditation, dance, pole exercise and self- expression through movement.

How it heals
Many women are not connected to their body and don’t really understand their feminine energy, which creates disconnection, anxiety, lack of confidence and a feeling of being incomplete. Women can rediscover their body and femininity (through movement), as well as wholeness and happiness.

What results can you expect?
Confidence, clarity, radiance and wholeness. Most women feel stronger, physically but also mentally and emotionally. And people around you will feel it, too.

Who is it best for?
Women who feel stuck, invisible, lost, uninspired, bored and those who don’t feel at home in their body.
Dhs680 for monthly package. The Sanctuary Studio, iFit Fitness, Villa 5, Street 51, Jumeirah 1 (056 214 3336).

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)

What is it?
A powerful technique that enables individuals to clear and release any spiritual, emotional, mental or physical challenges they may be experiencing in any aspect of life. It contains elements of acupressure, counselling and energy healing.

How it heals
The patient focuses on a specific issue while the practitioner taps on or quickly rubs specific parts of the body to stimulate meridian points. It’s thought that EFT helps to clear imbalances and negative energy in the body, essentially dissolving the emotional blockage. The patient thinks about the problem, while the practitioner voices positive affirmations and repetitive taps. It’s based on the 5,000-year-old Chinese system of acupressure and the understanding of energy within our system. Through the stimulation of these pressure points, deep rooted negative beliefs, emotions and thought patterns can be cleared.

What results can you expect?
Mental clarity and perspective, emotional balance and stability, improved self-esteem and self- confidence, financial freedom and security, spiritual growth, happier and healthier relationships.

Who is it best for?
It can help with almost anything, including trauma and abuse, phobias, anxiety and self-destructive behaviours.
Dhs450 per session. Miracles, 306 Icon Tower, (Next to Byblos Hotel), TECOM (04 363 9307).

Sound healing

What is it?
Patients are led through a guided meditation, which aims to de-stress and release tension, pain and fear as you listen to the sounds of Tibetan singing bowls. A guided visualisation then addresses the issue you have intended to come to heal. Next, the ancient sounds of the gongs guide you on a healing inner journey.

How it heals
Sound energy it is claimed enters our ears and cellular structure and can rearrange molecules. It is said to repair and return you to wellness and restores spiritual wholeness. The sounds move beyond your thoughts to bring you into the present. Here you are said to have access to your inner healer and body’s guidance system. Your body relaxes and your mind is soothed.

What results can you expect?
Release of stress and tension, deep cellular relaxation, chakra clearings, enhanced wellbeing and balance of the body, mind and spirit, as well as clearing emotional blocks.

Who is it best for?
People of any age with any issues, insomnia, stress and depression.
Dhs500 for a private session with up to ten others. Gold Energy Healing. Call for location (050 650 9954).
