Jenny Hewett visits ultra-girlie salon The Dollhouse at Dubai Ladies Club for hair styling and a gel mani-pedi.

The promise
This buzzing ladies’ salon offers everything from nails to waxing, facials and hair styling, all under the one roof.

Step by step
Having explained we’re attending a special occasion on booking and are time-constrained, we arrive a little frantic as we’re 15 minutes late following transport dramas. The decor is fun but borders on loud; pink and purple covers every square inch and chairs are decked out in Missoni-style print. The place is packed with ladies and little girls all being attended to, but there are still handfuls of staff sitting around. Even so, we wait ten minutes at the basin before anyone agrees to wash our hair. Following a lacklustre shampoo, we’re taken to have our Essie gel polish while the hair stylist blow-dries and curls our hair. She zips off saying it’s been finished and that she’ll be back later to unclip the front curl.

The result
Our nails are flawless, but on inspection our hair is not finished and the stylist has disappeared. We ask the supervisor if the stylist could please add some height and pin it off our face. After waiting a further ten minutes and explaining we’re in a hurry, the supervisor flat out refuses for the stylist to fix our hair, as she is with another client and we walk out feeling disappointed and frustrated.

Pros
• You can watch rom-coms on the large TV screen while you get your nails done.

Cons
• The place is crawling with kids.
• Staff were more concerned with asking to take photos of our hair than ensuring we were happy with what they had done.
• We had to finish our own hair at home, another added stress.
• There is zero sense of urgency.
