Pilates class in Dubai

We try the reformer pilates group class at Fitness 360 in J3 Mall

Jenny Hewett tests out the reformer pilates group class at Fitness 360’s ladies-only branch in J3 Mall.

The promise
This total body workout improves muscle tone and flexibility using a pilates machine made up of springs and pulleys to provide variable degrees of resistance.

Step by step
We’re just a small group of three and before the class kicks off, our friendly and focused instructor explains how to set up the machine according to our height. Her style is fun and motivational, and throughout the session we’re coaxed to push harder for results. She begins with the legs before we move to the core and then the arms. Placing the feet or arms in the straps (according to which muscle group we’re targeting) we pull down on the resistance and start doing reps, which bring the burn soon enough. The pace of the class is slower and less intense than we have experienced elsewhere, but unlike others, the instructor ensures that each position is being correctly executed.

The result
We leave the class feeling upbeat (the trainer’s demeanour seems to have rubbed off on us). We’re not sore the next day so much as tight and toned.

Pros
• The instructor has great energy, plenty of personality and is fun to work with.

Cons
• The machines are older than others we’ve used, but they manage to do the trick.
• The class is more suited to those with limited physical ability rather than gung-ho athletes.
