Tried & tested

Need a new look in time for the New Year? Holly Sands checks out a cut and colour at Pastels Salon.

The promise
Turning up with a faded ombre colour and ratty split ends, expert South African stylist Shakira assures us she can improve the condition, shine and appearance of our hair. If we can decide what we want.

Step by step
After vacillating between going for a starker ombre look or dark all over we go with the latter. After fixating on a picture of Rachel Bilson’s wavy, chocolatey locks, we opt for dark, but with a warm, slightly red tinge to take out some of the mousey ash. Shakira is brisk, efficient and quick to chastise us for skipping conditioner in the shower. Lecture over, we’re left for 30 minutes to let the colour take hold, before heading to the comfy lie-down basins for a wash and treatment. Once we return, Shakira runs her scissors across our ends for a blunt finish.

The result
A quick blast with the hairdryer later and we’re pleased with our very dark locks. The semi-permanent colour fades nicely over the next few washes, settling to a less dramatic shade.

Pros
• Shakira’s no-nonsense approach means she’s honest about what will look good on you, and if you’re not happy with the results, will help you fix them.

Cons
• We were left feeling like a naughty child for various perceived trespasses against our hair.
