Dubai's strangest spa treatment - 2015 review

Time Out Dubai looks back at some of Dubai's strangest spa treatments of 2015, including floatation pods, golf ball massage, caviar hair treatment and more

Into the womb
Located inside Madinat Jumeirah’s Talise Spa, the AlphaSphere Deluxe is a pod-like experience that promises to return those who step inside to their alpha state – or how they are in their mother’s womb – promoting deep relaxation and alleviating stress. You’ll choose from four experiences – basic blue, sensitive violet, intense red and energy orange – and slip, cocooned, into a pod. Does it work? We left feeling pretty confused and extremely zen, so we’ll say yes.

Floatation pods
Another day, another member of the Time Out team slips into a pod. This time, filled with water. Point Zero Floatation Center’s human-sized capsules offer the chance to experience total sensory deprivation – which apparently isn’t even slightly scary, but very calming. You even get a little neck pillow.

Underwater spinning
Thought pedalling, full pelt for 60 minutes was bad enough? You ain’t seen nothing until you’ve tried to add water resistance to the mix. Step up L’Atelier Aquafitness, which offers 45-minute group aquabiking sessions to thumping music. Try a regular session before you even think about putting your thighs through a cardio or swing session…

Golf ball massage
Much like your physiotherapy-aiding tennis balls, these aren’t just for playing with. Golf balls can also be used for a post-game recovery, according to 1847. Gimmick or not, it’s impressively effective, rolling smoothly along limbs and hard enough to knead deep into stubborn knots.

Caviar hair
Ditch the blinis. Caviar extracts can apparently do wonders for your blow-dry. It’s all down to the healthy fats in these undersea eggs, apparently, which can hydrate damaged hair, help prevent split ends and supposedly help promote weightless volume. Despite already having a fairly fabulous mane (if we do say so), the extra shine we left with was hard to miss.
