Lobster bake at Noepé

A laid-back Saturday lobster-fest on the edge of the Creek

1/2

What’s more New England than digging into freshly caught lobster, while sitting overlooking the water? We can’t think of many (perhaps the leaves turning brown in autumn, but that’s unlikely to happen here any time soon), so with its classic menu and nautical furnishings, Noepé has the East Coast vibe spot on.

The Cape Cod-inspired restaurant is part of the revamped Creekside area, The Promenade, at Park Hyatt Dubai, which is also home to Brasserie du Park and The Thai Kitchen. Noepé holds pride of place by the water, so take a seat outside for the full Massachusetts experience. With the yachts moored in front of you, billowing white curtains swaying in the breeze beside you and the neutral furnishings lifted by pops of blues and turquoises, you’ll feel fully immersed in that laid-back holiday vibe.

The restaurant is a hit for seafood-lovers at the best of times, but when you can get unlimited lobster for just Dhs295, we’re in. The Lobster Bake (AKA lazy Saturday brunch), runs from 12.30pm until 4pm every week and it’s a delightfully relaxed way to round off a sunny winter afternoon.

The event kicks off with a whole lobster, so don those aprons and up tools to get cracking (literally) on your shellfish. The sizeable crustacean is meaty, juicy and served with potatoes and al dente veg.

We’re also brought a platter of mussels and clams, swimming in light, fragrant sauce, as well as king crab legs, which we brandish with gusto, scooping out every last morsel of super-sweet flesh.

Next up there’s a whole host of dishes to choose from, all featuring the star ingredient, and all main course-sized.

We kick off with a piping hot bowl of mac ’n’ cheese and it’s a hit, despite going against the cheese-seafood rule. It’s also massive. Huge chunks of meaty crustacean are enveloped in a rich, cheesy sauce and we polish it off embarassingly quickly.

Mulling over what to have next (our waiter cares little for our waistline and seems to want to test our appetites) we’re recommended the lobster roll. We’re sold on the classic New England dish. And we’re thrilled.

The toasted brioche bun is buttered, rich and crisp, overflowing with an abundance of tender lobster meat. It’s not a light dish (and certainly not calorie-free) but it’s immensely satisfying and indulgent, with the sweet shellfish pairing beautifully with the crisp, tasty bread.

We’re told it’s a “bite-sized” serving, but don’t be fooled – it’s the full monty, not that we’re complaining.

Many of the dishes are on the butter-heavy side (we can’t find room for the lobster cheeseburger or lobster grilled cheese), but everything we try is seriously tasty. If you want (or, by this point, need) something lighter, opt for the lobster ceviche or lobster salad with tomato and onion.

An order of popcorn lobster goes down a treat – the meat is tender, the tempura batter is not at all greasy, and it’s a massive portion. Finally (yes, we’re still eating), we opt for the handmade spaghetti, which comes with datterino tomato sauce, chunks of lobster and fresh tarragon. It’s fragrant, rich and utterly delicious. We can’t fault anything we try, and we recline back in our comfy chairs taking in the views. As it’s a little quiet on our visit, the only thing missing is the atmosphere (and, by now, probably half the crustacean population).

But if you’re loony for lobster you’re in for a real treat, as both the setting and food is spot on at this Creekside brunch.
Dhs295 (soft drinks), Dhs395 (house beverages), Dhs550 (bubbly). Sat 12.30pm-4pm. The Promenade, Park Hyatt Dubai (04 602 1814).
