with dozens (if not hundreds) of brunches happening across the city every Friday afternoon, it’s understandable that some might go for a bit of a gimmick to stand out from the crowd.

And at brunch in Pier 7’s Cargo in Dubai Marina, this shouting for attention is taken to the extreme – and as part of the fun we find ourselves trying to knock over bottles of water using a pair of tights weighed down by a tennis ball, manouevre a cookie down our face without using hands and shoogle ping pong balls out of a tissue box attached to our back.

All these games are a part of the bizarre UnBoXed concept that unfolds half-way through the afternoon at Cargo.

After a couple of hours of picking at the pan-Asian pass-around canapés (think vegetable spring rolls, satay skewers and mini burgers) and a few plates from the somewhat limited sushi buffet, one competitor from each table is beckoned to take part.

While it’s a lot of fun, like the canapés we find it a bit under par for a brunch that costs Dhs390 per head, and many of the prizes on offer are beverages that are available on the brunch anyway.

Following the entertainment, we return to our seats and find our mains already on the table. While there’s no choosing from a menu here, the Thai seafood curry is delicious, with just enough of a spicy kick, while the steak served on a wooden board also goes down well with the table.

There are some vegetarian options, but it’s quite limited – with just two dishes catering to plant eaters. Those who don’t like seafood should probably stay away, too, because there’s a lot of shellfish on offer.

Dessert is in the form of a chocolate dome, which is melted by the waiter’s pour of hot chocolate sauce, which although a tried-and-tested brunching trick, still goes down a treat.

Although the tables outside are full, the crowd indoors is a bit more staggered – so make sure you bag one of the prime terrace tables to get the best views and ambience. It’s a young crowd, and everyone gets to know each other during the bizarre UnBoXed games making for a fun,
lively vibe.

It goes without saying that – as with all Pier 7 bars – the panoramic Dubai Marina views are genuinely spectacular. And we also like the live mixed drinks stations – particularly the Mexican mixed beverages – which is a great touch for a smaller bar brunch.

Another plus here is the late start time. With the brunch kicking off at 2pm, there’s plenty of time for a long lie-in the morning.

But considering the limited sushi selection, the lack of choice for mains and the weak pass-around bar snacks starter offer, it seems that rather than focusing on its culinary offering, Cargo is trying to pull too many gimmicky tricks out of the box.
Dhs390 (house beverages), Dhs490 (bubbly). Fri 2pm-5pm. Pier 7, Dubai Marina (04 361 8129).
