When we smugly resigned from our jobs back home, bid goodbye to our shivering loved ones and bragged about our new life in Dubai we did so with a certain image in mind. We had visions of sitting in the sunshine on Friday afternoons, digging our toes into white sands and wrapping our hands around a cold one.

As it turns out, we were fantasising about Breeze Beach Grill and its Shackfest feast, where life really doesn’t get any easier. Tucked away on the far end of Club Vista Mare, this “beach shack” is our current Best Outdoor Bar, and the vibe is super laid-back and weekendy.

We say shack, it’s actually closer to one of its Palm Jumeirah villa neighbours in size than a wooden hut, and it’s brilliant. You can sit inside and lounge on a wood-panelled sofa, take a seat on the terrace near to the live barbecue grill or lap up the sunshine and unleash those toes under a table on the beach.

We choose the latter and sit at the last available outside table – this is a busy brunch – looking out at the soaring coastline as a cool wind washes over us.

Food is served buffet-style with live food stations including a barbecue and stir-fry. Options include a range of sushi, healthy salads, curries and seasonal winter offerings. Skilled chefs pat, roll and slice sushi right in front of you. It’s fresh, inventive and not the usual poor imitation plonked on the side of some buffets.

A special mention must go to the mushroom arancini. The bite-sized rice balls are a credit to the authentic Italian street food.

The house beverage package includes a handful of mixed drink options, hops and grape.

Having saved room for a slice of cake from the dessert counter – where you’ll find sweets, ice cream and lollipops too – we burn off the calories with a round of pool, foosball and retro arcade game battle inside.

We celebrate victory as the DJ spins a mellow remix of Anita Ward’s disco classic Ring My Bell. And, taking our seats back on the beach as the sun begins to set on another brilliant Friday afternoon it becomes the perfect soundtrack: days like these are what rings our bell.

Ahh, this is the life.
