We Love it when we’re lured into brunch for the Mexican vibes (tacos, quesadillas y mas), and then we’re treated to pool and beach access for the afternoon, too. We get the impression that the team at Maya Mexican Kitchen in JBR were in a spiffing mood when they created this brunch, because the added bonus of post-brunch pool vibes is a welcome touch.

But before you get to take a dip in the frankly glorious hotel pool (complete with swim-up bar), there’s the small matter of a banging brunch to attend to.

Mas Mas Maya Brunch blurs the line between foodie brunch and party brunch, and it manages to execute food, fun and family-friendliness with aplomb. Greeted with a smile, a Mexican mixed drink and a magnificent walk across the lawn at Le Royal Méridien Beach Resort & Spa in JBR, it’s almost impossible to arrive at this brunch in a bad mood.

Fun fact: Mexico is actually in North America, contrary to popular opinion. So, it’s in high spirits that we begin our culinary journey through the southernmost country in North America, and we begin with great relish.

The vibe is seriously relaxed, with the post-brunch jaunt to the pool meaning most brunchers sit with swimwear at the ready. There’s some live music from a band on the lower part of the terrace, playing many a popular tune from Latin America. The band members are in full Mexican outfits (including a few wearing slightly disingenuous fancy dress ponchos and sombreros), and sporadically roam between tables to increase the lively feel.

You’ll find most joy to be had at the live stations/carts where you can customise your own nachos, tacos, ceviches, ensaladas and more – and if you have dietary requirements the staff are fantastic at making sure vegetarians, vegans and those with allergies are well catered to.

The quesadillas and tacos are worthy of mention, and we find ourselves scoffing our faces with folded tortillas for the first 90 minutes of the afternoon. We then have to be metaphorically restrained to keep us from eating every fajita the restaurant has – we’ve rarely enjoyed such tender and flavoursome chicken and can’t help devouring the deliciously sizzling onions, peppers and sauces in record time. By the time the churros and cakes arrive, we’re bursting.

Unperturbed, we power through until it’s time for the poolside after-party – which is a top way to end an afternoon full of fiesta fun.
