A Friday night brunch at a Japanese classic

Not everywhere needs to be shiny and new to make an impact, and Sho Cho’s night brunch proves that. Although the meal itself is a relatively recent addition to the dining scene, the restaurant has been making waves for years.

In its prime, Sho Cho was a hugely popular nightspot thanks to its waterside dancefloor, crisp white furnishings and well-heeled crowd. And, although it’s not as fresh as it once was, this laid-back Japanese restaurant shows no sign of losing its appeal. When we visit for the Friday brunch the terrace is packed.

Brunchers from Dubai Marina, JLT and JBR don’t be put off by the lengthy trip down to Jumeirah, it’s well worth the effort, especially for the views and vibe.

Once you arrive at the Dubai Marine Beach Resort & Spa head through the entrance, wind your way around the private beach and follow your nose to the glorious smells pouring out of the sizzling kitchen. Take a seat on the low down table and chairs and soak in the Burj Khalifa and beach views.

Food is served as a rolling set menu, with the option to dive back into more of any dish that piques your interest. It’s not the best Japanese food we’ve found in this city, however it’s well-executed, served quickly and extremely good value at just Dhs250 including house beverages.

We start with a steaming bowl of edamame, impressively long prawn spring rolls with a kick of wasabi mayo, grilled prawn gyoza, seaweed salad and seared salmon. It’s all fresh and tasty.

Main courses include beef and chicken teriyaki, seafood sushi and black cod, which is surprisingly good.

Service is speedy and as the DJ spins his way through a mix of ’80s disco, ’90s hip-hop and ’00s hits we down chopsticks, pick ourselves up and hit the floor.

The vibe is lively and the location is still impressive, especially if you’re taking guests. An oldie, but still a goodie.
Dhs140 (soft drinks), Dhs250 (house beverages). Fri 8pm-11pm. Dubai Marine Beach Resort & Spa, Jumeirah (04 346 1111).
