The Great Waldorf Astoria Brunch

Family-friendly brunch on the Palm

It’s brunch season again – and Dubai is out in force trying to catch the best that lazy Friday afternoons have to offer before the major summer sizzle.

Happily, Waldorf Astoria’s very relaxed feast on Palm Jumeirah is the ideal place for chilled-out weekend brunching with all the family.

Its end-of-crescent location means quiet vibes, something that’s not found at some other hotels in the area.

The hotel’s shiny, understated-yet-luxurious interiors welcome us inside, and we’re glad we took the trip around the Palm to get there.

As soon as we walk into Mezzerie restaurant, we see (and smell) why the brunch is primarily described as a seafood feast.

We take our seats outside on the pleasant terrace where the vibe is buzzing, cheerful and filled with families. Some are heading to the beach, others enjoying the food and there’s even a play area set up in the garden.

Inside, there’s a big fresh seafood section and right next to it are sushi and sashimi stations. The selection is super-fresh with the nigiri very carefully crafted into delicious portions of sticky rice topped with wasabi-glued tuna and salmon slices.

As we’re digging into the raw buffet, a chef passes by with a trolley carrying oysters and caviar angel hair pasta – and it’s so, so good. We go inside for some cooked seafood, and we’re not disappointed here either.

There’s also a barbecue outdoors serving up some grilled meat, and while we like the sausages, the lamb chops fall short being dry and rubbery. It seems as though the fresh catch takes centre stage at this one.

The international cuisine is a bit lacking in variety, and appears to have been cooked with less passion. The roast potatoes stand out and we can’t get enough of the crispy carb. The crunchy sweet and sour chicken is punchy and full of flavour, too.

If you love dessert you’re in luck as there’s a huge selection laid out to choose from.

From authentic Indian and Middle Eastern sweets, to red velvet slices, cheesecake, chocolate cups and kids’ favourites (gummy bears and ice cream, not just for kids), it’s all in there.

And if you’re visiting with children, the little ones are sure to be happy, as a magician makes rounds, much to their delight. There’s also a saxophone player to keep the vibe upbeat and grown-up at the same time, which all makes for a fun, yet casual ambience.

With top dishes and a friendly vibe, this is a great buffet brunch if you’re looking for something to suit everyone.
