It’s one of the swankiest beach clubs in the city and it’s with great enthusiasm (and a beach bag full of inflatables) that we totter down to Pearl Jumeira with visions of gliding on blow-up unicorns across crystal waters with pink drink in hand as a cool breeze blows.

It’s a swish operation, and when we arrive we’re whisked to a perfectly situated table overlooking the pool (but just a short dart from the spread). Yes, that’s right, this is a buffet brunch – but don’t let that put you off.

Food ranges from fresh seafood – oysters, huge juicy prawns, mussels and the like – to a variety of fresh crunchy salads, beautiful sushi and a dessert table that will catch the eyes of any with a sweet tooth.

The cheese table is laden, and fromage-lovers will be delighted to hear that there are tonnes of different crackers to load and chutneys to smother with (including our beloved Ritz). Everything is replenished frequently and it all tastes absolutely superb.

A live shawarma station sees smoky chicken, salad and chillies rolled up into bursting wraps to suit your liking, while the barbecue station dishes up juicy steaks, jerk chicken and fish.

On the more-than-likely event that you visit on a sunny day you’ll also be granted pool and beach access, to digest your feast in a leisurely fashion (right up until the sun goes down at 7pm).

Unfortunately on our visit it’s a tad chilly to splash about in the sea, so we lounge around the pool rather than take a dip.

Our disappointment doesn’t last long though, when a saxophonist starts doing the rounds, before convening with the rest of the band to belt out some jaunty tunes, accompanied by a live beatboxer, which gets our solid stamp of approval.

Service is excellent and friendly, and we’re frequently topped up with drinks.

The party continues later on with brunchgoers and beach club visitors mingling, chatting and lying on giant sunloungers.

And it’s with pure pleasure that we leave the brunch, cheese cravings adequately satisfied.

We’ll save those unicorns for another day, we’ll be back.
