Pizza? Check. Live music? Check. Dough balls? Double check. We should warn you this is going to be a rather saccharine review, but we’re so impressed there’s nothing else for it.

We didn’t think Jazz@PizzaExpress could get much better, what with its excellent-value, infinitely popular Friday brunch and two-for-one Mondays offer. But when it launched its new Thursday night brunch, weekends as we know them changed forever.

The deal is as follows: unlimited starters, one main course – and free-flowing drinks from 8pm until 11pm. We’re up for it, and so are the many other excitable pizza fans crammed into the heaving venue.

Starters include a heap of tasty baked mushrooms, stuffed with pesto and mozzarella before being showered with Parmesan and placed on bed of rocket. We wolf them down in record time, and order more, before repeating with gusto.

We move on through tasty meatballs in a rich tomato sauce, but the stars of the show – as always – are the dough balls. (Sorry, Chef.) We plough through pillowy orb after pillowy orb, vigorously dunking them in garlic butter before throwing them back almost whole.

By this point the singer is belting out the likes of Marvin Gaye and Jason Mraz. Our toes start tapping and our hips begin to sway. When he leaps onto a speaker and starts beatboxing, we lose all control. Our arms blow up into the air, and it’s happening – we’re dancing.

Once we’re up on our feet there’s nothing that’s going to get us back down – until mains arrive. It’s all solid, consistent PizzaExpress fare.

Luckily the party continues with a DJ and a drunch package, where you’ll get five drinks for Dhs150 and, predictably, the venue
stays packed.

Top food, a laid-back yet lively vibe and a roster of top musicians all combine to mean this brunch gets the thumbs up from us.
Dhs150 (soft drinks), Dhs225 (house drinks), Dhs250 (bubbly). Thu 8pm-11pm. Cluster A, JLT (04 441 6342).

An absolute bargain Thursday night out, with top tunes and familiar food

Because it’s an all-out end-of-the-week party, with pizza thrown in. What’s not to love?
