Blushing Dragon at Karma Kafé

Chic night brunch at a popular Asian spot

There’s been an upturn in the number of night brunches around lately, and we’re thrilled. As much as we love a daytime eating excursion, there’s something about an all-inclusive evening package that often ticks even more boxes.

Karma Kafé in Souk Al Bahar runs its Blushing Dragon brunch on both Thursday and Friday nights from 8pm.

This cool, dimly-lit spot has long been popular with tourists and residents alike. Overlooking The Dubai Fountain, the setting of this dark, sleek venue is enviable. The terrace is where it’s at, so take a seat here in cooler months and enjoy the impressive show (or just nip outside when you want to watch some dramatic dancing water every half-hour otherwise).

The interior is chic too. From the creators of the world-famous Buddha-Bar chain, it’s easy to see the link at Karma Kafé, both in décor and vibe.

As you walk in, the moody atmosphere and furnishings – all reds and blacks – set you up for a cool, classy night out. It’s busy more often than not, especially with this twice-weekly deal drawing in the crowds. And it’s worth it – a meal here, even without drinks – doesn’t come cheap, so a brunch is the ideal way to experience it.

The vibe is upbeat and the crowd is well-heeled, so whether you’re dining with friends or as a couple it’s a suitable choice.

Unfortunately the food lets it down a bit. Although the selection is plentiful, and à la carte, it’s just not up to the standards we’ve come to expect from the popular Asian spot, and the dip in quality is palpable.

While the dim sum is excellent (we could eat those truffle-packed sweet potato dumplings for days) the sushi is lacklustre and the tuna pizza is average. Main courses don’t fare much better – give the black cod a fair berth.

For setting, vibe and views this gets top marks, the food just needs to catch up with the rest.
