Jaws, Jurassic Park and The Hills Have Eyes. What do they all have in common? The protagonists all have an insatiable thirst for meat.
It’s with this in mind that we prowl our way down to The Meat Co. in Souk Al Bahar for its Friday brunch, with full intentions of making a scene with a slab of sirloin as part of a personal brunch-themed blockbuster.

The opening frame, however, fails to make an impression. There’s a noticeable lack of extras (fellow diners), the soundtrack is lacking (no crescendos here) and the other actors (waiters) don’t seem to know their lines.

We take our seats and wait for our cue, but no one asks what we’d like to drink or takes our order for a good 20 minutes, by which point our stomachs are growling like a hungry T-Rex.

When the signature beetroot and chocolate bread arrives, we’re disappointed. It’s like a toasted teacake that your nanna would dish up, but without the side of chocolate fingers and pocket money.

The novelty is lost on us, and we wait another agonisingly long period of time for some average beef sausages in a tomato sauce, some lacklustre calamari and other hot bits and pieces.

The tuna tartare from the cold appetiser platter goes down well, though we could take or leave the quinoa salad.

So far, it’s a flop – until the main courses arrive.

The main event is a choice of steaks, salmon, a wagyu and truffle pizza and potato gnocchi. Being at a place called The Meat Co. we have to go for the steaks, which all come with a side of truffle fries and a sauce of choice.

It’s our moment to shine, and we do not disappoint. A medium-rare fillet steak is tossed up in the air and swallowed whole with all the prowess of a great white shark. Exaggeration aside, we fervently slice through the perfectly-cooked, juicy flavoursome meat, and cram it into our watering mouths.

And the meat doesn’t disappoint, either. It’s excellent, and finally we begin to relax. Sadly our joy is all a bit short-lived as the desserts aren’t noteworthy in any way.

Despite its location in Souk Al Bahar it’s very quiet for a brunch, although in winter this will be made up for by the stunning views of The Dubai Fountain (make sure you bag a spot on the terrace for a prime postion).

After the main courses, the only other meaty thing to arrive is the bill, which is hefty at Dhs395 each for soft drinks.

It might not wow all the way through, but far as the steaks go, we can’t deny The Meat Co.’s mains are impressive.

Would we want to see the sequel? Not in its current state.
