When a brunch comes along and gets it spot on for the whole family, you miss it when it has a seasonal hiatus, and this is one such Friday feast.

After an absence over the summer, The City Brunch at Hilton Al Habtoor City is back to wow us all over again.

Is anything different? There have been a few tweaks, most noticeably to the kids’ area where a slightly different set-up makes the whole zone a lot more welcoming with an arts and crafts table and colourful beanbags dotted around the place. The TV is still in situ, but is not such a main feature.

Slime-making and crafts are hosted by two creative ladies (though warn the kids not to deviate from the task at hand as that seems to be frowned upon).

The kids’ buffet is the perfect height for even the smallest diners to be able to load their own plates themselves, although parents, keep an eye on them as the sweets and deserts are equally as accessible. Plus it does give kids the chance to put things back from where they came if they conclude after a quick bite that actually the broccoli and the cucumber sticks aren’t that appetising after all.

The main buffet is as impressive as we remember with 17 food stations showcasing the very best dishes from each of the hotel’s restaurants.

The choice is mind-blowing, from hot and cold mezze at the Middle Eastern station to maki rolls and sashimi in the Japanese zone. Think of a cuisine and it’s more than likely to be lurking somewhere among the spectacular spread.

We are so overwhelmed we have to gather our thoughts and work out our plan of attack because we want to try it all.

Dim sum is a good place to start. The dumplings are cooked at the station so once news spreads about how moreish the chicken ones in particular are, the queues start to form.

Then it’s on to the seafood station where mussels, lobster and prawns are beautifully presented and throw us off track as we are so impressed we end up going back for seconds.

The carvery section is a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach. Six different cuts of steak are the main pull on which you can slather on your choice of 12 sauces or dollop a spoonful of one of the ten varieties of mustard on your plate.

And with more than 40 desserts, those with a sweet tooth should save some room.

The staff are lovely too, managing to keep our glasses successfully topped up without us noticing. Though we end up quenching our thirst at the various interesting themed drinks stations too.

This brunch gets it right for the entire gang, so will definitely be a regular on our Friday feasting list. Plus, we still have to make our way around all the stations – and that is going to take a few visits.
Free (kids 12 and under), Dhs300 (soft drinks), Dhs425 (house beverages). Fri 1pm-4.30pm. Hilton Al Habtoor City, Sheikh Zayed Road (04 435 5577).
