The stats speak for themselves: breast cancer accounts for 23 per cent of all cancers diagnosed in women and is thought to cause 450,000 deaths worldwide every year. So it’s unsurprising then that Breast Cancer Awareness Month, held every October, is a well-recognised global event featuring countless fundraising initiatives to boost awareness and raise cash. Here’s where and when to do your bit in Dubai.

Pound the pavement
Taking place on October 28, the Pink Walkathon is arguably the culmination of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Dubai. It’s a hugely popular annual event –thousands of people took to the streets in support last year – and takes the form of a non-competitive 3.6km walk. There are plenty of activities organised along the way and after the walk: the Pink Bazaar will be open all day until 10pm, ensuring this is a hugely enjoyable and social occasion for all the family.
Dhs50 (includes a T-shirt – all proceeds go to charity). 7am (registration), 8am (start time). BurJuman, Bur Dubai, www.safeandsound.ae (04 352 0222)

Strutting their stuff
The Pink Survivor Fashion Show will take place on October 21, featuring breast cancer survivors modelling high-end garments sold by retailers at BurJuman mall. It’s an inspiring event, and a show of solidarity for the campaign’s message.
Free. 7.30pm. BurJuman, Bur Dubai, www.safeandsound.ae (04 352 0222)

Shop for charity
Head to Times Square Centre on Friday October 14 to peruse artisan goods made by local craftsmen and women at the ARTE Pink Market. The theme is pink (of course) and the market will feature unique hand-made items, including handbags, jewellery, haute couture clothing, pottery, silk- and wool-felted scarves, photography, digital art, paintings, and more. Some of the participants have pledged all of their proceeds to charity, while others will donate a percentage of the sales to the cause.
Free entry. Noon-7pm. Times Square Centre, Sheikh Zayed Road, www.arte.ae (04 341 8020)

Eat cake for a cause
On Thursday October 13, BurJuman will host ‘Cakes for a Cause’, a bake sale featuring delicious sweet treats from some of Dubai’s leading bakeries such as Kitsch (04 395 6963; www.kitschconcept.com) and
Sweet Lane Cakes (04 344 3633; sweetlanecakes.blogspot.com), and hotels such as Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach (04 449 8888) and Al Maha Desert Resort (04 303 4222; www.al-maha.com) – with 25 per cent of proceeds donated to the campaign.
Free. 4pm-9pm. BurJuman, Bur Dubai, www.safeandsound.ae (04 352 0222)

Pugs in pink
Who’d have thought that squashed-nose dogs could be used to raise money for breast cancer? On October 21, Dubai Pug Club is planning to hold its first ever ‘Pink Pug Friday’ meet-up to promote breast cancer awareness and raise money for charity – there will be a donation jar at the event. Pugs and their owners are encouraged to wear pink (those without pugs are also welcome to attend, though this might be a little odd).
Entry is via recommended donation of Dhs20. 8am. Venue TBC. www.dubaipugclub.com (050 688 1319)

Jump on the caravan
On October 20 and 27, the Pink Caravan will stop at Wild Wadi Ladies’ Night to provide free breast screenings for visitors to the waterpark. Pink Caravan is part of the Friends of Cancer Patients national campaign, and its presence not only offers support, care and screenings to women, but also helps raise awareness of breast cancer.
Wild Wadi entry Dhs175; screenings free. 8pm-midnight. Wild Wadi, Jumeirah Beach Road, www.pinkcaravan.ae (04 348 4444)

Pledge your support
During October, lingerie brand K-Lynn is teaming up with Dubai London Clinic to raise awareness of breast cancer: ladies who have their photo taken at a K-Lynn store or sign a pledge postcard will get a free mammogram.

Free. Times vary. Until October 31. Mall of the Emirates (04 341 0708), Festival Centre (04 232 5944), Deira City Centre (04 294 3060), Mirdif City Centre (04 284 3420), www.dubailondonclinic.ae, www.klynn.com
