Do something worthwhile with Friends of Cancer Patients
This local charity raises money, organises awareness campaigns and supports people battling cancer, as well as their families. The group welcomes willing volunteers.

Donate unwanted trainers to Soles for Souls
If you have old sneakers kicking around the house, Soles for Soles is taking donations of trainers to give to the UAE’s labourers. Just make sure they’re clean.

Community drumming
Head down to Marina Mall every Thursday to take part in family community drum circles and fire dancing. All ages and abilities are welcome to join in, from beginners to experts, and drums are provided.

Brunch and bowling
This Weekend Fun meetup group will get together for brunch (the venue is yet to be decided, so keep an eye on the group’s page) followed by bowling at Dubai Bowling Center in Al Quoz.

Emirates Photography Club at the Dragon Boat Race
Practice capturing motion shots at the dragon boat festival this weekend, alongside members of the Emirates Photography Club.

Dubai Animal Rescue Centre open day and garage sale
Buy brand new clothes donated by Splash or bag second-hand bargains at this fundraising event. There will also be live entertainment, photo opportunities with the animals, face-painting and snacks. You may even
leave with a new family pet.

Meetup for Charity desk at Dubai Flea Market
Members of the Dubai’s meet-up group Proud to be an American will be selling their second-hand wares to raise money for charity at the Dubai Flea Market. Donate your own items for sale, or head down to pick up a bargain. All proceeds go towards buying food every Friday for labourers in Al Quoz.

Take your recyclables to Emirates Environmental Group’s family day
Every Saturday, EEG encourages families to visit its headquarters on Jumeirah Beach Road to drop off any recyclable household waste, including plastic, tetra packs (that’s juice boxes, to the uninitiated) aluminium cans, paper and glass.

African djembe and Arabic tabla classes
Drop in to these popular community drumming classes and learn to play the African djembe drum, which the organisers claim is a great way to de-stress. Alternatively, participants can also learn to play the tabla. Djembe Dhs50 per session, Tabla Dhs60 per session, drums provided. Take a public speaking course
This two-day course returns from April 9-10 and will help you learn skills from professional presenters on how to deliver your best, whatever the language or situation.

Riding for the Disabled
Lend a hand at riding classes for children and young adults with physical and mental disabilities by leading horses and offering support to riders. No previous experience necessary – just patience, good humour and commitment.

Meet the author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series
Community group Inspiration Lounge takes a field trip this week to attend author Jack Canfield’s live talk at Ductac, followed by dinner at Après in Mall of the Emirates. Attendees must register and pay through the Right Selection website ( and RSVP on the group’s Meetup page.
