The Holy Month of Ramadan is a time to slow down, reflect and help those in need. We take a look at some organisations and their projects that can help you partake in the spirit of giving this month.

Wild Wadi Waterpark
Entry to the waterpark will be free every Monday between 3pm-7pm for guests who donate more than three items of clothing. These items will be handed to the Beit Al Kheir Society, a non-profit organisation offering a helping hand to underprivileged families in the UAE.

Until Eid, Mon 3pm-7pm. Wild Wadi Waterpark, Jumeirah Beach Hotel (04 348 4444)
the [sameness] project’s Water for Workers
The popular Water for Workers day organised by the [sameness] project will take place one weekend before the start of Ramadan. This project occurs throughout the year. Each car-load of volunteers will receive two crates of water and a ‘thank you’ handkerchief to hand out to labourers. Volunteers are asked to arrange their own transportation and to dress modestly. Sign up online to get involved.
Sat June 13, 10am. Collegiate American School, www.thesamenessproject.com

38 Smiles
Animal lovers can volunteer with this organisation to care for stray and abandoned cats, providing them with foster homes until suitable, permanent owners can be found. The organisation also requires volunteers for its next adoption day on Friday June 19, to help with answering phones, meeting and greeting potential adopters and feeding the animals. Training and support will be provided. To get involved, email info@38smiles.com.
Fri June 19, 3pm-6pm. The Pet Store/Creatures Oasis, 31A Street, Jumeirah (04 343 4534).

Merciful Hands’ Gift Box Appeal
This organisation runs food and clothing distribution programmes throughout the year, and during Ramadan will be organising a gift box appeal. Members of the community are asked to buy five extra items when shopping, to be added to gift packages that will be distributed to families in need in Dubai and Ajman. The items can be long-life food stuffs, toiletries and new or very good quality second-hand clothes. Merciful Hands drop-off points will be set up in JLT, Dubai Marina,
DIFC, Deira and Mirdif. For full details of collection sites, email Siama Qadar, sqdubai14@yahoo.com. Until June 24.

The Mission to Seafarers’ Community Project
The organisation supports port workers and seafarers. As part of its Ramadan Community Project, it will be distributing packages of clothes and toiletries to those who will be working at sea for months on end. Volunteers are needed to help with the initiative. Those interested must be over 16 with a valid Emirates ID, and must have a can-do attitude. A bus will depart from The Mission to Seafarers’ office in Oud Metha and take volunteers to Port Rashid.
To get involved, email theresa@angelappeal.org. June 27-28, 8am-noon, www.angelappeal.org (04 357 6060).

Live Below the Line

Could you live on just Dhs6 a day? The international Live Below the Line campaign is asking people to do just this, every day for a week.
Run by the Global Poverty Project, the initiative is taking place in the UK, the US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia, but anyone can take up the challenge. Those who take part must put themselves in the shoes of the 1.2 billion people who live in extreme poverty, to think differently about the choices they make every day and raise funds for the communities and projects that need them most around the world. This is a great way to engage with the spirit of empathy and self-discipline that takes place during Ramadan.
The campaign will run until Thursday June 30. Visit www.livebelowtheline.com to sign up and donate, and also for ideas and tips on how to make your Dhs6 a day stretch.
