As Expo 2020 draws closer, further plans for the event have been revealed.
First, it was announced back in September that the site for Expo will be converted into District 2020, the show’s legacy, and plans are underway to create a thriving neighbourhood in Dubai South that will attract businesses, residents and more.
It’s nearly exactly three years until Expo 2020 opens its doors in Dubai, and if you’re wondering what you can expect from the event when it rolls into town, head down to The Beach, opposite JBR, on Friday October 20, for a sneak peek at plans for the show.
This countdown event will be inspired by some of the biggest announcements ever to have come out of previous World Expos. Think the ice cream cone, television, zip, instant coffee, and so on, and will also celebrate the official launch of the volunteer registration process.
Expo 2020 is seeking 30,000 volunteers to be the “face” of the global event, and a dedicated portal to sign up, www.volunteers.ae/expo2020, will go live on Friday October 20. More than 45 roles, from event managing to welcoming guests, will be available to register for.
Of the 30,000 volunteers, 70 percent are expected to come from outside the UAE, a proportion that is unprecedented in the 166-year history of World Expos.
The organisers have said that volunteers will play a crucial role in the event’s success, which is expected to welcome up to 25 million visits during the six-month event.
Over the 173 days of Expo 2020, more than 16 million volunteering hours will be logged, so this is one massive effort.
“We have created strategic roles to ensure volunteers get the best out of their experience, including skills that they can go on to use in the workplace or in their daily lives, said Reem Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation and director general of Expo 2020. “They will be ‘face’ of the event since most of our visitors will have an initial contact to Expo through meeting a volunteer. We look forward to welcoming anyone who wants to connect with fellow volunteers from around the world and gain an experience of a lifetime.”
