Sharjah Art Foundation launching first edition of annual art book fair FOCAL POINT

Sponsored: The brand-new three-day annual art book fair will feature print products by publishers from the region and across the world

Interested in the creative designs and art books from around the region and the world? Or have ideas of creating your own? Good news, as Sharjah Art Foundation is launching a new art book fair extravaganza called FOCAL POINT, and it’s inviting everyone to take part in the three-day event.

Running from Thursday November 8 until Saturday November 10, the new annual event will include invited publishers – both independent and mainstream – who will present their printed products.

This year’s edition of FOCAL POINT will have, well, a focal point on independent and alternative publishing practices, and will take place in the intimate setting of the heritage building, Bait Obaid Al Shamsi in Sharjah’s Arts Square.

What to expect? Three days featuring a series of talks, screenings, a book launch, a lecture-performance, art projects, an open studio, themed educational workshops and much more.

One of the highlights of the event will see the first official collaboration with Asia Art Archive in the UAE, bringing the conference It Begins with a Story: Artists, Writers, and Periodicals in Asia. It’s here where attendees can learn and take a deeper look into history and present state of publishing in the wider Asia region.

As well as this, and just to make navigating around the fair a touch easier, FOCAL POINT will be split into various spaces, including the EDIT, INDEPENDENT and UAE sections.

The EDIT section will take up a principal part of the art book fair, presenting content for platforms around the world in multiple languages, with participants including Chimurenga, African Art Book Fair, Khoj, Vasl, Terremoto and of course Sharjah Art Foundation.

There will also be the foundation’s own section within EDIT, featuring a range of publications by Raking Leaves, 3030 Press Publishing, Lars Mueller and many more.

As for the INDEPENDENT section, expect to see independent publishers from across the world, with Kulte Editions, Blaft Publications, Kaph Books, Triple Canopy, Saqi Books, Tara Books and Bon Art Book Fair all showing off their fantastic pieces.

Finally, don’t miss the UAE space that’s all about local masterpieces, with organisations such as non-profit institutions, art centres and galleries from Sharjah, Dubai and Abu Dhabi that are engaged in publishing artist books, exhibition catalogues, artist monographs and other printed matter on art.

FOCAL POINT aims to offer a broad perspective on art publishing, to explore the creative world of art books using Sharjah Art Foundation’s commitment to the medium of print.

It’s an art book fair not to be missed, and you’re invited to see it all.
Free entry. Thu Nov 8- Sat Nov 10. Arts Square, Bait Obaid Al Shamsi, Sharjah, sharjahart.org (06 568 5050).
