Free Al Quoz Arts Fest returns to Alserkal Avenue

There’s nothing we love more on a Saturday morning than picking up a matcha green soy latte, throwing on some dungarees and wandering around the art exhibitions at Alserkal Avenue.

And with the return of Quoz Arts Fest, there’s never been a better time to don the beret, roll up those sleeves, and swan around making “observations” about artefacts – and there’s plenty to be seen.

The massive arts fest will be taking over the alleys of Alserkal on Friday January 25 and Saturday January 26 celebrating all things community, culture and art.

Every man, woman, child and dog (pets are welcome), can head down to enjoy a tonne of curated exhibitions, live performances and activities over the course of the carnival, which is titled CTRL+ALT+ACTION.

This year the theme is sustainability and the festival investigates how small changes in our lifestyles can impact large-scale economic, environmental and social improvements.

Entry, workshops and live music is all free and there’ll even be cinema screenings and unique food concepts on offer.

Exhibitions include a showcase of Emirati wildlife at Mirzam by the EMF/WWF and product manufacturing that can outlive generations at ikonhouse.

If you want to get your hands dirty, ChariCycles and ‘Metal Art by Nikhil.es’ will both offer upcycling art workshops for children and adults.

At the same time, CHI-KA, a contemporary kimono and art space, will be hosting an interactive class on the power of composting.

Another thing to look out for is Putting for Pleasure and Politics, a group exhibition curated by NYU Abu Dhabi professor David Darts displaying nine artist-designed mini-golf holes. There is also a Reel Palestine public film screening on Saturday January 26.

During this period, The Junction will be hosting the Short+Sweet Theatre Festival, a six-week collection of ten-minute plays by local writers, actors and theatre groups. Check out the array of incredible talent grown from local soil or, if you’re a performer yourself, you can sign up for Sima Performing Arts’ lyrical contemporary dance workshop.

We can’t wait to get down there and check it out.
Free. Fri Jan 25-Sat Jan 26, 10am-8pm. Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz (050 556 9797).
