Feeling arty? The Jameel Arts Centre is perfect for getting your cultural fix and this month there’s a tonne of arty activities going on to make you feel superior to your brunch-flocking, beach-dwelling mates.

The independent institution is dedicated to exhibiting contemporary art to the public and engaging the community through learning, research and commissions from its scenic spot on Jaddaf Waterfront. So what’s happening in April?

1 Film
We all know what it’s like. Your flight gets delayed, your phone dies and you’re left climbing the airport walls with the fury of caged animal. Imagine that – times ten years. Tripoli Canceled (pictured right) is a film by Naeem Mohaiemen that follows a week in the life of a man who has been trapped in an airport for a decade, portraying his daily routine of walking, writing letters and reading a weathered copy of British children’s book, Watership Down. There will be daily screenings of the film every two hours on the hour from Wednesday April 10 until Saturday May 11, so there’s no excuse to miss it.
Free. Sat-Thu 10am-8pm, Fri noon-10pm. (every two hours on the hour).

2 Conversations on Practice
Conversations on Practice are artist-led presentations about ongoing issues in the industry. The first this month is on Wednesday April 10 from 6.30pm to 7.30pm with Mumbai-based artist and researcher Ranjit Kandalgaonkar. Kandalgaonkar will present his ongoing project Modelled Recycled Systems looking at the expanded ecologies of the shipping industry, in particular the complex and layered space of the ship breaking yard in South Asia.

The second gathering will host UAE Unlimited and will see curator Laura Matzler chat to artists Zara Mahmood and Tor Seidel about everyday material and their work in the context of the ongoing exhibition Tashweesh: Material Noise carried out at Maraya Art Centre in collaboration with UAE Unlimited. The talk will be held on Tuesday April 16 from 6.30pm until 7.30pm, and promises to be thought-provoking to say the least.
Free. Wed Apr 10, Tue Apr 16, 6.30pm-7.30pm.

3 Library Circle
Consider yourself a bit of a book worm? This is one talk that will really give you food for thought. Architect and designer Rand Abdul Jabbar is joined by Yousif Al Diham, an archaeologist and preservation specialist from Iraq for a talk at the Jameel Library about their ongoing collaboration and the challenges of cultural preservation in conflict areas.
Free. Wed Apr 17, 6.30pm-7.30pm. Jameel Arts Centre, Jaddaf Waterfront, Al Jaddaf, www.artjameel.org (04 873 9800).
