Five creative workshops to try in Dubai
Gulf Photo Plus

Fancy exercising your creative prowess? Well there’s never been a better time. Whether you fancy whipping up an original scent or getting down to some hard documentary making, you’ll find a workshop to hone your skills (or create new ones).

1 Gulf Photo Plus
Fancy yourself as the next Louis Theroux? Gulf Photo Plus is offering a filmmaking workshop that will shape up your shooting and editing skills over the course of eight hours split across two days. Topics covered include the differences between capturing motion and photography, filming in natural and artificial lighting, editing video and audio files and cohesive storytelling. The workshop will be headed up by a group of pros to guide you. It’s time to enlighten the world.
Dhs995. Fri Jun 14 & Sat Jan 15, 10am-3pm.Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz, www.gulfphotoplus.com.

2  KAVE The Story of Things

Sometimes we need a space that will serve you healthy grub, offers work benches to customise bikes and furniture, and is pet-friendly. Sound like something you’d like to try? Alserkal Avenue’s new upcycling café, Kave: The Story of Things, is all about protecting the environment by using zero-plastic, using cutlery and crockery that are either up-cycled or recycled after use. Kave offers simple but healthy dishes, including a bowl of pho along with freshly made roti – which guests can pay forward by buying someone else a roti. There’s also a bundle of different workshops that take place weekly, including guitar making, embroidery lessons, meditation sessions, bottle cutting workshops and chaircycling rides.
Open Mon-Sat 11am-9pm. Warehouse 20, Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz www.thestoryofthings.com (055 102 4469).

3 thejamjar

thejamjar is the hub of arty workshops and activities. Situated in Alserkal Avenue, you’ll find all manner of classes on offer, from figurative drawing to oil painting. Try the Illustration Techniques workshop on Saturday June 22 to become an expert on shade and light when using watercolours. Personally, we are fans of the DIY Painting sessions, which are available every day. Just show up and let loose on a blank canvas using an unlimited supply of acrylic paint. Warning: this one will get messy.
From Dhs89.23 (DIY Painting), Dhs189 (Illustration Techniques). Sat Jun 22 3.30pm-5.30pm, open daily 10am-7pm. Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz, www.thejamjardubai.com.

4 Perfume making at Burj Al Arab

It’s getting very hot in Dubai, and chances are you don’t quite smell like roses. But fear not, now you can create a unique personal scent. Back to the Burj is an in depth perfumery course where you can conjure up your own original scent, bottle it up and boast about your skills every time someone tells you you whiff (in a good way).
Dhs3,285 (three-day course). Times & dates vary. Burj Al Arab, Umm Suqeim, www.bymelaniejane.com.

5 Sketch Art Café & Sketch Studio

Try your hand at a spot of drawing, painting, sculpting, printmaking and mosaics  at this brand new café-come-art studio on Al Wasl Road in Jumeriah. The space is sectioned off into a studio and café, where you can illustrate paper coffee cups, the most striking of which will be put on display on the Coffee Cup Wall of Fame.
Open daily 9am-11pm (9am-2pm during Ramadan). Al Wasl Road, Jumeirah (04 271 2603).
