Dubai Opera to stage Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing

Dubai Opera hosted its first-ever play this year – with Shakespeare's Othello taking to the stage.

And now another of the Bard's most famous works is coming to the city direct from the UK, and it's a good one.

Much Ado About Nothing will be staged from Wednesday September 25 until Saturday September 28 with tickets starting at Dhs150.

The comedy, which was written around 1598, tells a tale of power and passion as Beatrice and Benedick try to outwit and belittle each other at every opportunity.

As friends and family gather for the wedding of Claudio and Hero, two simultaneous plots emerge.

The first, a sinister attempt by Don John to destroy the impending marriage. The second, a hilarious battle to bring Beatrice and Benedick together at last.

Directed by award-winning Derek Bond, the play is being staged by the New English Shakespeare Company which is adding a contemporary and musical twist to the beloved work.

Producer Jamie Hendry said: “Shakespeare is one of the best, if not the best, British cultural export.

"His plays have the extraordinary ability to transcend borders, cultures and language.

"New English Shakespeare Company was born out of a passion to make Shakespeare’s work resonate with today’s audiences.

"The world is an increasingly fractured place to live in right now, and Britain’s place within it is under the spotlight.

"Shakespeare’s words speak to everyone, and our mission is to help his plays sing out loud and clear to the hearts and minds of audiences everywhere in productions that are bold, lively, relevant, meaningful and, above all, entertaining."
From Dhs150. Various times. Wed Sep 25-Sat Sep 28. Dubai Opera, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard, Downtown Dubai (04 440 8888).
