Free desert film festival launches in Dubai’s Al Marmoom

We’ve heard of watching a blockbuster flick on the beach, but how about in the deserts of Dubai? We’re definitely keen, especially since it will become an annual event.

Dubai Arts and Culture Authority, under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has launched the very first edition of Al Marmoom – Film in the Desert.

Taking place this weekend until Saturday March 7, the big event aims to support Emirati and UAE-resident filmmakers by showcasing their works as well as present workshops for new talents and a series of masterclasses.

It’s a film festival, after all, so expect plenty of cult classics and a showcase of local indie talent.

Today (Thursday March 5), you can catch a special programme of Emirati shorts, stories of everyday life, ritual, tradition, mischief and joy by filmmakers from the region, from 7pm to 7.55pm. There will also be a screening of the classic Lion in the Desert afterwards from 8pm.

As for Friday, expect another selection of Emirati shorts from 7pm, Academy Award nominee Theeb at 7.50pm, and George Miller’s cult classic hit Mad Max: The Road Warrior from 9.40pm.

To finish it all off on Saturday, there will be three movies to watch, including You Will Die At Twenty from 6.45pm, Mimosa, where a caravan escorts an elderly Sheikh through the Moroccan Atlas from 8.35pm, and finally The Letter Writer at 10.30pm.

It’s a completely free-to-attend event, and you can check out the full schedule right here.
