From playing Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. in Selma to playing Harold Soyinka. We can’t say whether David Oyelowo saw himself moving from a role portraying one of the greatest men in history to that of a hapless businessman kidnapped by Mexican gangsters in this fish-out-of-water thriller, but we sincerely doubt it.
At least he’s not floundering alone. The Mexican bad guys look about as deep as a puddle after a minute of rain, and the appearance of Charlize Theron as Soyinka’s boss seems another waste of her skills.
Director Nash Edgerton has some super short films under his belt (and four Bob Dylan music videos) and has a fantastic cast that also includes his brother Joel, Thandie Newton, Amanda Seyfried and, making her movie debut, Paris Jackson. It’s a shame this effort doesn’t seem to make the most of their collective talents. Maybe it’s just a bad trailer.
The bottom line
Great cast not put to best use.
