StreetDance 3D

A street-dance crew melds classical ballet into their routine

Charlotte Rampling, George Sampson

The pitch

As unusual career choices go, Charlotte Rampling’s decision to star in this London-set 3D street-dancing movie ranks alongside her decision to have an on-screen affair with a monkey for Nagisa Oshima’s Max, Mon Amour in 1986. Elsewhere, it puts the various victors of reality TV’s Britain’s Got Talent to wholesome use in a story about how a street-dance crew melds classical ballet into their routine to win a competition.

The word

It’s the UK’s first 3D movie, and what with the failsafe success of any film title furnished with that golden suffix, this one seems pretty bankable. Also, we’ve seen it, and – the crushingly formulaic plot aside – the dancing is very impressive indeed.
