How did you get into the business?
My father was a film distributor and I have always been fascinated with what he did. I remember I’d wait for him after every film festival to go through the brochures, scripts and magazines he’d bring back.
What does a film distributor do?
We establish relationships with producers and sales agents and continuously read scripts to see if it is commercially viable for the region. We then acquire the film rights and launch it in cinemas.
How do you know which films will succeed in this region?
Any action film with a Dwayne Johnson in it will basically be a winner. There are risks with films such as It Follows or Fahrenheit 9/11, which you passionately believe in, and you get a major boost when they work.
What’s the best bit about your job?
When I take a punt on a small film that eventually makes it, defying everyone’s expectations. It feels great.
