M.S. Dhoni film - a profile on the star

Time Out looks at the release in cinemas in Dubai of the M.S. Dhoni film - a profile on the star. Discover why India's greatest ever captain is so popular

For those not in tune with the sound of leather on willow, the name Mahendra Singh Dhoni might mean about as much to you as an enforced follow-on or the Duckworth-Lewis method. M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, a biopic about the Indian cricketer, is released this week, so we did some research on the guy being played by Sushant Singh.

So who exactly is Mr Dhoni?
He’s only the most successful Indian captain of all time, leading the country to the top of the Test rankings, victory in the 2011 World Cup and 2007 World Twenty20.

Okay, but why make a film about him?

Because his is an incredible tale of rising out of obscurity to become all-conquering.

How so?
Well, “Mahi” grew up in Jharkhand, not exactly known for its cricketing prowess. In his early career he had to combine playing with being a ticket inspector with Indian Railways.

Did he have much to do with this?
Plenty. He was on board from the off and has been promoting the film in the US. Dhoni reportedly told director Neeraj Pandey not to “glorify” him and was smiling when he first saw it.

And what do his peers think?

Fellow Indian star Gautam Gambhir has had a pop, saying: “I think those people who have contributed more to the country than the cricketers deserve a biopic.” However, judging by Dhoni’s film star looks and Gambhir’s lack of them, perhaps this quip is tinged with jealousy.

M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story will hit cinemas in Dubai on September 30.
