The Hummingbird Project

The Hummingbird Project

TIME OUT SAYS

Can Jesse Eisenberg repeat the formula of The Social Network and take a dull-sounding tale of a man with a plan to genuinely dramatic silver-screen magic? Well, the Facebook film had something of a dream writer/director team of Aaron Sorkin and David Fincher, so the success can’t solely be placed at the actor’s door. Plus, he does have the talents of Salma Hayek and Alexander Skarsgård alongside him here.

Directing and writing is Kim Nguyen. The French-Canadian has had some critical success with prevous movies including Eye on Juliet and Le Marais and here turns his attention to something of a labour of love for him. It’s the tale of two cousins (Eisenberg and Skarsgård), traders who have a plan to get one up on their rivals and really strike it big. They come up against their former boss (Hayek), who has her own ideas about who will get to pull off their big masterplan.

Don’t expect any Wolf of Wall Street fun, frivolity and excess here, however, this is a fairly moral and serious movie about what drives people, the lengths they’ll go to to achieve their goals and how you can lose your connection to the real world along the way.

So, what is the Zaleski cousins’ grand plan? To lay a fibre-optic cable across the USA, thus shaving a few miliseconds off their trading time, allowing them to get in ahead of their rivals and makie huge profits along the way. It sounds pretty staid, but seeing this pair of suited and booted city boys mooching around in ditches and muddy puddles in Middle America threatens to destroy them. Truth be told, it doesn’t sound or look like it has the potential to be an award-winner or record-breaker, but if you can stomach Eisenberg, his fellow actors are on fine form.

There’s an allegory along the way about giving digital transactions (both financial and personal) more credence than physical ones, and how technological advances can often come at the expense of traditional ways of life.

A lot of work and thought has gone into this movie. Worth a watch, we think. Paul Clifford
